About Baton Rouge Orchid Society
The Baton Rouge Orchid Society is a non-profit organization devoted to the expansion of knowledge, culture, propagation, use, and appreciation of orchids. To these purposes, the members gather several times a month at various locations to focus on various aspects of orchids
History of our society:
Founded in January, 1956, the society formally organized as the Greater Baton Rouge Orchid Society and became affiliated with the American Orchid Society. Our organization was also affiliated in early years with the Orchid Digest Corporation. Exact date unknown. The society officially chanted its name in 1959 to the Baton Rouge Orchid Society (BROS). In 1978 BROS became members of the Southwest Region Orchid Growers Association (SWROGA). During 1983, the society incorporated and elected its first Board of Directors. In March of 2004, BROS began holding its monthly meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.
Shows and special events:
Baton Rouge Orchid Society's first annual show was held at Baton Rouge Garden Center in July of 1980. A show has been held there each July since that time, except 2003 and 2011 when the Society hosted the SWROGA show at alternate sites.April, 2003 - Society held its first SWROGA Show at Holiday Inn South, Baton Rouge.
Spring, 2011 - Society held the SWROGA 100th Show from April 1 - 3 at Holiday Inn on Airline Hwy.
Special Interest Groups / Related Clubs:
The Green Growers group was formed in January, 1990 and meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month to educate new orchid growers. The Green Growers meet at local members homes and also have an anual potting workshop, usually around April/May, to educate members on how to successfully divide and replant your precious orchid plants.
